Iran Nuclear Deal: US Rebuffs Sanction Exemption to EU Companies

  • The US has rejected the pleas from EU which urged it to grant sanction exemptions against Iran to European companies. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has mentioned the reason of rejection in the letter to European nations, stating that the US wants to exert maximum pressure on Iran. He added that exemptions could be made if they somehow benefit the US national security. According to the EU, Washington's new sanctions could jeopardize trade worth of billions of dollars.

The US imposed the sanctions in May after Trump withdrew from the international agreement on Iran's nuclear programme. However, countries like, the UK, Germany, and France are still committed to it.
