India building world's tallest statue
November 5 , 2013
India is planning on building a 597 feet tall statue in Gujarat, honoring one of the founding fathers Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who helped bring India's states together after the country gained independence form Britain.
The statue carries a price tag of $340M and has been criticized by many, who say India's government ignores one-third of the country's population that continues to live in poverty.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi will oversee this project. Earlier this week, Modi mentioned that Patel would be a better choice for the statue than India's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru.
The 500 feet tall Spring Temple of Buddha in China is currently the tallest statue in the world.
