ICTR overturns Rwanda genocide convictions

  • A United Nations-backed court overturned the genocide convictions of two Rwandan ex-ministers on Monday, ordering their immediate release.

Justin Mugenzi and Prosper Mugiraneza were sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2011 by a lower court.

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) dismissed their conviction on charges of complicity to commit genocide and incitement to commit genocide.

An estimated 800,000 people died during the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
