Hundreds of millions hit by India power cuts

Hundreds of millions of people across northern and eastern India have been affected by a major power cut.
More than half the country has been left without electricity after three grids collapsed, one for a second consecutive day.
Transport came to a standstill with hundreds of trains and Metro services in the capital New Delhi halted, along with many traffic lights failing leading to massive traffic jams.
Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has blamed the crisis on states using too much power from the national grid.
The breakdowns have hit some 600 million in 20 of India’s states.
India's demand for electricity has steadily risen in recent years due to its booming economy but its power infrastructure has been unable to meet the increasing needs.
