Hugo Chavez suffers complications after surgery

  • Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is suffering from "complications" due to a "severe lung infection" developed after surgery, according to officials.

Chavez, 58, had his fourth operation to treat cancer in Cuba on December 11 and later developed a respiratory infection.

In a statement released by the government on Thursday, Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said the infection had "led to a respiratory insufficiency".

Chavez is due to be sworn in for another term in office on January 10.

He has not been seen in public since having surgery in Havana, spurring speculation over his condition.
