Hong Kong protesters, police heading for a showdown

  • Giving an ultimatum of sorts, Hong Kong’s chief executive has warned that pro-democracy protests in the city must be cleared by Monday.

But after his statement, thousands of people gathered at the city center to rally against attacks on protesters.

In a televised address, chief executive Leung Chun-ying said the entrances to government buildings must be cleared by Monday so that state employees could resume work, and roads unblocked for schools to re-open.

The police have meanwhile denied allegations that they had in any way supported gangsters who assaulted protesters.
