Hong Kong: 2017 election candidates to be screened, say reform proposals

The proposed reforms for Hong Kong’s 2017 election do not allow a fully free voting process as demanded by the pro-democracy movement.
Crucially, the electoral blueprint released by the government of Hong Kong conforms to guidelines from China that the candidates will be screened. According to pro-democracy activists, this means the polls won’t be democratic.
The announcement of these measures last year had triggered months of unprecedented street protests in Hong Kong.
