Hissene Habre sentenced to life in prison

  • Hissene Habre, ex ruler of Chad, has been sentenced to life in prison on charges of crimes against humanity. Habre, who was sentenced at his war crime trial in Senegal, has also been convicted of sexual slavery, rape and ordering killings. As per reports, this is the first time when a former ruler has been tired by an African Union-backed court for human rights abuses. Meanwhile, Habre, who was in power from 1982 to 1990, has denied charges that he ordered the killings of 40,000 people.
