Hillary Clinton affirms Afghanistan as 'major non-NATO ally'

  • The United States has awarded Afghanistan the status of "major non-NATO ally".

The designation includes countries such as Australia, Egypt and Israel and gives preferential access to U.S. arms exports and defence cooperation.

The announcement was made by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during an unannounced visit to Afghanistan.

It came a day before a major donors' conference in Japan, set to discuss aid after most NATO-led troops leave the country in 2014.

Donors at a meeting in Tokyo are likely to commit almost $4 billion in annual development assistance to Afghanistan.
