Georgian Presidential Elections are Now Open

  • Georgia’s presidential election has begun today (October 28, 2018) at 8 am local time in over 3,600 polling stations. Polling will be closed at 8pm local time. The Central Election Commission has reportedly said that the total number of eligible voters to cast their votes is 3,518,877. Reports say 25 candidates are running for the president’s post. In Georgia’s presidential election, an outright winner is declared if he/she gets over 50% votes of the total cast votes. Ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party-backed Salome Zurabishvili is reportedly leading the polls, followed by United National Movement party led 11-party coalition candidate Grigol Vashadze, and European Georgia’s Davit Bakradze. 66-years old Salome Zurabishvili was foreign minister of Georgia from 2004 to 2005 and also served as French ambassador to Georgia. Her main opponent 60-year old Grigol Vashadze was also a foreign minister during 2008-2012.
