French President Calls for Tougher Sanctions on Venezuela

  • French President Emmanuel Macron called for imposing tougher sanctions on Venezuela after Supreme Court of the South American country imposed restrictions on main opposition coalition (Democratic Union Roundtable or MUD) in participating 2018 Presidential election, to be held in April. Macron expressed concern over the human right violations and lack of democracy in Venezuela. European Union went on to impose travel ban on 7 senior officers of Venezuela along with freezing of assets. French President made these comments after a meeting with Argentine President Mauricio Macri in Paris. Incumbent Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro wants a re-election "to put an end to the imperialist threat".
