Frankfurt riots target new ECB building

  • Anti-austerity demonstrators clashed with the police in the German city of Frankfurt. The demonstrators, who were protesting the opening of a new base for the European Central bank, set on fire several cars and also threw stones at the police. One police officer was injured in the rioting that took place close to the Alte Oper concert hall. According to media reports, thousands of "Blockupy" activists will hold a rally in the center of Frankfurt opposing the ECB’s role in austerity measures in EU member states. Meanwhile, the police have stepped up security and have set up a cordon of barbed wires outside the building.
