Former Portugal PM Jose Socrates remanded in custody

In a development that has shocked the country, Jose Socrates, the former prime minister of Portugal, has been remanded in custody in a corruption case, media reports say.
The center-left leader, who was detained after he returned from France on Friday, has spent three nights in prison so far.
The judge’s decision came as investigators look into suspicious banking operations and money transfers.
The 57-year-old Socrates, who was prime minister between 2005 and 2011, and his close friend are among those being investigated.
