Former defense chiefs warn of nuclear weapons' risk
December 8 , 2014
A global group of former defense chiefs and other key figures have warned that nuclear weapons in ready-to-launch mode posed a serious risk, and not enough was being done to minimize it.
According to the European Leadership Network, such weapons meant high risks of an accidental strike conducted by a nation state, and stockpiles not guarded properly could be used by terrorists.
In a letter they have urged all nations to “redouble efforts” to move towards a nuclear weapons-free world. The signatories included former UK defense and home secretaries; ex-French PM Michel Rocard; and retired American general James Cartwright.
