Fighters linked to al-Qaeda seize Yemin army base
February 13 , 2015
Fighters linked to the al-Qaeda have reportedly seized an army base in Yemen amid a stark warning by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon that the country was “collapsing before our eyes”.
The Ansar al-Sharia group claimed to have captured the base and seized soldiers in the southern Bayhan town.
Instability in the country has sharply increased after Shia Houthi rebels ousted the Sanaa-based government. There are fears of a civil war as the Houthis grapple with various Sunni groups including the Al-Qaeda in Yemen (AQAP) for control of territory.
