Ferry sinks after collision in Philippines
August 18 , 2013
31 people were found dead after a ferry collided with a cargo ship in southern Philippine islands. 172 other people are still been looked for and over 600 had been rescued Saturday morning.
Authorities fear people were trapped inside the ferry at the time of collision near the city of Cebu. The accident could have been much worse since the ferry had 831 passengers on board, most of them have been rescued.
According to the official, one of the vessels ended up venturing into the wrong lane since the ferry was entering at the time and the cargo ship was leaving. Reuters reports that it is not unusual for hundreds of people die every year in such accidents
Ferries are a common mode of transportation in the region and the one that collided yesterday had been in operation for 40 years.
