EU Trade Commissioner says No Immediate Clarity on Exemptions after Steep US Tariffs

  • European Union’s Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom met US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer as well as Trade Minister of Japan Hiroshige Seko in Brussels. She reportedly said there is “no immediate clarity” from the United States regarding the ability to get exemption from the US after the imposition of new tariffs (as announced by the US President Donald Trump) regarding imported steel and aluminium. Cecilia also said the issue will be discussed further by all sides in the coming one week. Japanese trade minister urged all sides to act calm-headedly in the dispute. The countries expecting to get exemptions from steep US tariffs include Canada, Mexico, and Australia.
