September 10 , 2014
An elephant killed James Laurita, the co-founder of Hope Elephants, a home for the animals who had retired, in Maine, United States.
Police said one of the elephants at the home accidentally stepped on him.
Fifty-six-year-old Laurita, who had set up the facility together with his brother in 2011, was a former circus elephant handler.
The board of Hope Elephants said his death had “deeply saddened” them, adding that his “passion for animals” was “boundless.”
