Eduardo Campos, the socialist party candidate for Brazil’s presidential polls, was killed in a plane crash near São Paulo, according to media reports.
Six other passengers and crew died in the mishap that occurred as the private jet was getting ready to land. Initial reports suggested that the plane may have encountered bad weather.
Campos’s death has triggered a debate about the impact it will have on October’s presidential election. Dilma Rousseff, the country’s president, has declared three days of mourning.
