Earthquake strikes Taiwan

  • Taiwan was struck by an earthquake that measured 6.1 on the Richter scale on Thursday, April 18, 2019. The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be in the coastal city of Hualien. With the buildings badly shaking, local children had to be evacuated from schools. The effect was felt even in the capital city of Taipei, where subway services had to be suspended as a safety measure. In the past, Taiwan has witnessed substantial loss of lives and property in devastating earthquakes, though no casualties have been reported in the current situation.
