Dozens found alive after Dhaka building collapse
April 26 , 2013
Dozens of people were found alive amongst the ruins of a collapsed building outside the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Thursday.
Wednesday morning’s collapse in Savar killed at least 250 people with many more still unaccounted for.
According to police officials, the owners of garment factories in the building had dismissed warnings about cracks appearing the previous day. The collapse has again raised concerns over safety standards in Bangladesh’s garments industry. However, factory owners insist safety standards have improved in recent years.
According to activists with the Amsterdam-based Clean Clothes Campaign, labels from European and American brands were found at the scene of the collapse.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared Thursday as a national day of mourning in memory of the victims.
