Don;t blame the drowned in case of ferry disaster
April 26 , 2014
The world is searching for answers in case of the Sewol ferry disaster and looking for someone to blame.
"If that was a boatload of American students, you know they would have been finding any and every way to get off that ferry. But in Asian cultures ... compliance is de rigueur," Dallas Morning News noted.
"It's called 'culture blaming,' and the media embraces it - especially the mainstream," Kai Ma at Time writes. "On the surface, it appears like an innocuous and thoughtful attempt to offer insight, but at the root is the suggestion that these cultures are inferior, broken, or backwards."
Blaming it on some culture flaw is not correct journalism and targets "the victims and their families as a nation grieves."
