Death toll mounts in India landslide, dozens still missing
August 1 , 2014
Rescuers searched for an estimated 120 people still believed to be buried under mud and rocks after a landslide submerged more than 40 homes of a tribal village in India’s Maharashtra state.
The official death toll in Malin village has already crossed 40. Heavy rain slowed down attempts to reach huts using earth-moving machines as rescuers worked through the night.
The National Disaster Response Force has admitted that despite their best efforts “with every passing moment the situation is taking a turn for the worse.”
