Death toll in Chinese quake rises to 589

At least 589 people were confirmed dead in the earthquake in Yunnan province of southwest China, media reports said. More than 2,400 people are reported injured.
The bulk of the causalities occurred in Ludian county. Longtoushan, a town 23 km from Zhaotong city, was the epicenter of the 6.1 quake.
The central government in Beijing has sanctioned 600 million yuan ($97 million) for relief work.
Officials in Zhaotong said more than 200,000 houses in the city were affected by the quake.
