Colombian rebels released US hostage

  • According to a statement by the Norwegian and Cuban governments, guerrilla fighters in Colombia have released a US hiker, who was held hostage for four months.

Both Norway and Cuba are sponsoring peace talks between Colombia and FARC rebel group; the release of Kevin Scott Sutay was a condition for the continuation of these negotiations.

The 26-year-old US military vet was returned to Red Cross representatives in "good condition."

Sutay ignored police warning and was taken captive when he was hiking through a rebel area.

"The United States is profoundly grateful to the Government of Colombia and commends its tireless efforts to secure his release," John Kerry said.

Sutay has previously served in Afghanistan.
