December 4 , 2014
The department of US justice will conduct a civil rights probe in the death of a black man, Eric Garner, in New York, according to media reports.
A white police officer had placed 43-year-old Garner in what has been reported as a chokehold.
A grand jury came to a decision not to indict the officer Daniel Pantaleo, following which the US Attorney General Eric Holder has ordered an inquiry. The grand jury’s decision has sparked off protests in New York.
