CIA foils al-Qaeda "underwear bomb" plot
May 8 , 2012
U.S. intelligence officials have foiled a plot to detonate a version of the failed 2009 “underwear bomb” by al-Qaeda in Yemen.
The device was seized by CIA agents and is reportedly being examined by the FBI.
Initial media reports suggest no targets were chosen and no plane tickets had been purchased at the time the plot was disrupted.
No information has been released on the would-be bomber.
Officials say the bomb bears hallmarks of the device sewn into the underwear of a suicide bomber on a plane headed for Detroit on Christmas Day nearly three years ago.
The latest version of the device included powerful industrial explosives and did not use metal, presumably allowing it to pass through airport security.
