CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

  • CIA director David Petraeus has stepped down from his post because of an extramarital affair.

In a statement released on Friday, Petraeus said he had submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama.

He said: "Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation."

Petraeus was appointed as the head of the CIA last year after serving as the commander of international forces in Afghanistan.

"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair," said the statement.

CIA deputy director Michael Morell is to serve as acting director of the agency.
