China warns Taiwan's new President

  • China warned Taiwan’s new president against any move to break away from it. It openly declared that any such move would make it impossible to maintain peace in Taiwan. Taiwan’s recently elected president Tsai Ing-wen made certain remarks in her inauguration speech that irked Chinese authorities. Taiwan and China had split after the Kuomintang Nationalist Forces lost the civil war against the communist forces in 1949. However, they did not officially declare the breakaway. Beijing still sees Taiwan as a part of its territory. Even though Tsai maintains status quo,China is suspicious of her as she belongs to Democratic progressive party which is a pro independence party.
