Manuel Contreras, the chief of intelligence service in Chile during the Augusto Pinochet regime, has died at the age of 86.
He reportedly passed away in a Santiago military hospital.
General Contreras, who headed the country’s intelligence service called Dina, had been sentenced to 500 years in prison for human rights abuses.
The families of victims accuse Dina of being behind hundreds of murders and disappearances during the Pinochet regime in the 1970s and 80s.
