Chavez can delay oath and begin term
January 5 , 2013
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez can begin his new six-year term in office on Thursday even if he is too ill to attend a swearing-in ceremony, his government said on Friday.
Vice-President Nicolas Maduro announced the Supreme Court could swear in Chavez at a later date.
Chavez, 58, is currently in Cuba recovering from complications due to a severe lung infection developed after surgery.
He had his fourth operation to treat cancer in Cuba on December 11 and later developed a respiratory infection.
Chavez was due to be sworn in for another term in office on January 10 after being elected in October.
He has not been seen in public since having surgery in Havana.
