Caspian Sea oil rig catches fire; 30 workers missing
December 6 , 2015
Thirty oil workers are reported missing after their rig in the Caspian Sea caught fire, according to Azerbaijan’s state energy firm Socar.
Thirty-two workers were rescued, the firm said on its website. But rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather, reports said.
A storm damaged a gas line in the Guneshli section of an oilfield, triggering the fire, Socar said.
In a statement, the office of Azerbaijan president Ilham Aliyev said: “According to preliminary information, one person died. At this time, rescue operations continue.”
