Captain left Costa Concordia while passengers were still on board
December 11 , 2013
Testimony and taped phone calls played in a court suggested that Capt. Francesco Schettino left Costa Concordia while hundreds of people were still on board the ship after it wrecked back in 2012.
Gregorio Di Falco of the Livorno Port Authority said he himself initiated rescue efforts after repeatedly ordering the captain to get back on board. Falco mentioned that Schettino's information was not consistent so he didn't wait for his distress signal.
Schettino initially said only a dozen passengers were on board when he abandoned it but later changed the number to about 200. He faces charges of causing a maritime disaster and manslaughter but still denies any wrongdoing.
The trial may continue for a couple of weeks.
