Canadian divers find doomed British ship from 1845 expedition

  • Canadian divers have found the remains of a British navy ship that had mysteriously disappeared in the mid-19th century in the Arctic.

HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, which were part of expeditions sent by the explorer Sir John Franklin, had both vanished in 1845. It is assumed the divers have found one of the two vessels.

Describing the discovery as a “historic moment” for Canada, the country’s prime minister Stephen Harper said Franklin's ships were “an important part of Canadian history.”
