Canada cuts diplomatic ties with Iran
September 8 , 2012
Canada is to shut its embassy in Iran and expel Iranian diplomats in Canada, Foreign Minister John Baird said in a statement on Friday.
The Canadian government cited Iran's support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as the reason behind the decision.
Baird added that Iran had also engaged in "racist anti-Semitic rhetoric and incitement to genocide".
Iranian diplomats have five days to leave Canada.
Canada has also designated Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism, including it on a list of countries subject to travel warnings for its citizens.
