Burundi: 'Coup stopped', but President Nkurunziza unable to return to country

  • The political unrest in Burundi has escalated after a top military officer launched a coup against President Pierre Nkurunziza, who was attending a summit in Tanzania and thwarted from returning.

However, the success of the coup was thrown into doubt after General Niyongabo, the chief of the armed forces, declared in a radio broadcast that the coup attempt by Maj Gen Godefroid Niyombare “has been stopped”.

Meanwhile, heavy gunfire has been reported in capital Bujumbura.

Niyombare earlier announced that he did not recognize the president’s leadership as Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term was unconstitutional.
