November 19 , 2014
Burma has ruled out any pre-poll changes to the constitution that prevents democracy activist and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from being president, according to media reports.
Shwe Mann, the parliamentary speaker, said constitutional amendments cannot be carried out “straight after the referendum,” which is to held next May on constitutional changes.
His comments came after US president Barack Obama supported 69-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi’s efforts to alter the charter.
Polls are slated in Burma for November next year.
