Britain ends combat operations in Afghanistan

  • Britain has officially ended its combat operations in Afghanistan, with the last UK base in the Asian country handed over to Afghan forces.

British troops had arrived in Afghanistan in 2011. Michael Fallon, the UK defense secretary, said though “mistakes were made”, a lot was achieved since then.

The death toll of British troops in the conflict is 453. Camp Bastion was their main base, in Helmand Province. Fallon said the “tremendous sacrifice” made by the troops had laid the foundation “for a strong Afghan security force”.
