Brazil: Ruling party's treasurer steps down after arrest over corruption allegations
April 16 , 2015
Joao Vaccari, the treasurer of the governing Workers Party in Brazil, has stepped down after his arrest over corruption at the state-run oil company Petrobras.
Vaccari, who was allegedly part of a scheme involving hefty bribes exchanged between politicians, construction companies and oil executives, is a close aide of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
Though Rousseff has not herself been implicated in the widening corruption scandal, she has faced impeachment calls and massive street protests since she was re-elected president four months ago.
