Blast in Istanbul nightclub kills 39

In yet another brutal terror attack in Turkey, at around 0115 hours local time, a lone gunman dressed as ‘Santa Claus’ entered the Reina nightclub in Ortakoy district of Istanbul and opened fire on New Year party revelers inside, killing 39 and wounding over 40. The dead included 16 foreigners. Reina is a popular nightclub with locals and tourists and is located on the shore of the Bosphorus Strait.
The gunman opened random fire that caused panic among the 500 odd people present there, many of whom panicked and jumped into the cold waters of the Bosphorus. Police shot dead the gunman.
Global leaders have condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with Turkey. Turkey has been in the forefront of the war in Syria and is playing a crucial role in brokering truce along with Russia and Iran.
