Belgium is considering euthanasia for kids
November 1 , 2013
Belgium is currently debating a difficult topic: legalizing euthanasia of children.
It would require the approval of the parents and will apply to only those children who are in a "desperately painful situation."
The bill is facing opposition from the Christian Democratic Flemish party, which plans on fighting against it till the end.
According to a Catholic archbishop, "palliative sedation" renders the need for euthanasia unnecessary because patients can be sedated and taken off life support. However, death could take days in this manner.
Euthanasia among adults has been legal in the region for over a decade and adults might also be given the right to die early in cases of dementia.
Parliament is required to approve of a final decision and the process could take months.
