Australia recalls envoy after Indonesia executes its citizens
April 29 , 2015
The Australian government has recalled its ambassador from Indonesia after Indonesia executed two Australians for drug smuggling.
Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran and six other men of various nationalities were executed by firing squad on Nusakambangan island. But the execution of Mary Jane Fiesta, a Philippine woman, was called off at the eleventh hour.
Calling the executions “cruel and unnecessary”, Australian prime minister Tony Abbott said that it “cannot be simply business as usual”.
The Brazilian government, too, expressed “deep dismay” over the execution of its national Rodrigo Gularte.
