Asia Bibi's Husband Pleads Asylum from UK, USA, and Canada
November 4 , 2018
Ashiq Masih, husband of Asia Bibi (Christian woman from Pakistan acquitted of blasphemy), has reportedly pleaded for asylum from multiple countries including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. He said their lives are in great danger. Pakistani Supreme Court has acquitted Asia Noreen (popularly called Asia Bibi) of blasphemy after 8 years on death row. The apex court observed that the case against Asia Bibi is based on flimsy evidence. However, her acquittal led to violent protests from hardliner Islamic organizations. Pakistan’s government has also buckled on pressure and reportedly agreed to try to stop her from leaving Pakistan. Reports say Asia Bibi’s lawyer Saif Mulook has fled the country citing fear for his life.
