Armenia Votes in Early Election to Test Power Shift after Peaceful Revolution

  • Armenians have started voting in an early parliamentary election on Sunday. Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is looking for a stronger mandate after a peaceful revolution during early 2018 put him into power. Pashinyan, who was the ex-editor of a newspaper, became the symbol of protest against the corrupt after he was jailed by the then authorities on charges of fomenting unrest in 2008. The legislators elected Nikol Pashinyan as the acting PM after the May 2018 revolution. After assuming power, he dissolved the parliament in October 2018 and called for an early election. The election started on Sunday at 8 am local time (04:00 GMT) and will continue till 8 pm local time (16:00 GMT). Results will be declared early on Monday.
