Angela Merkel clashes with Martin Schulz in TV debate for the German Federal Elections 2017
September 4 , 2017
Before Germany's Federal Election on September 24, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Martin Schulz faced off in a TV debate. Polls released by Germany's public broadcasters later declared German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the winner of the German Elections. The 97 minute long debate was the only televised debate between Merkel and Schulz. The discussion ranged from refugee policy to Turkey and domestic security. According to media reports, it was Merkel's best debate performance. However, Schulz focused on social justice, unemployment and poverty. For Schulz, the debate was viewed as a chance to claw back his position. As per a survey published last week, nearly half of German voters remained undecided and winning their support will be crucial for both Merkel and Schulz.
