ANC Conference Starts to Choose President, Zuma Calls for Unity
December 16 , 2017
African National Congress (ANC), governing political party of South Africa, is in the process of choosing the successor of current President Jacob Zuma. The leading contenders for the top position are Cyril Ramaphosa (current Deputy President) and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma (President Zuma's ex-wife and former cabinet minister). The fierce battle for the leadership has raised speculation of a possible split within ANC before the upcoming Presidential election in the year 2019. As South Africa limits maximum terms of a President to just two 5-year terms, President Jacob Zuma (who is acquiring the President’s office till 2009) will not be able to run for any more terms. During the 4-day conference, held in Johannesburg, Zuma has urged ANC leadership to remain united.
