Al-Shabaab names new leader after Godane's death
September 7 , 2014
Al-Shabaab, the Somali militant group, has named Ahmad Umar as their new leader after confirming that Ahmed Abdi Godane, the previous leader and co-founder of the Islamist group, was killed in a US air strike.
In a statement the al-Shabaab, which is linked to the al-Qaida, said "avenging” the death of its leaders was a “binding obligation”.
Godane had claimed responsibility for the 2013 attack on Kenya’s Westgate Mall that killed at least 67 people. Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta thanked the United States for “bringing an end to Godane's career of death and destruction”.
