Al-Qaeda Yemen bomb plot foiled by double agent

  • The would-be bomber in a plot by al-Qaeda in Yemen to attack a U.S. bound plane using an underwear bomb is reported to have been a double agent.

In a supposed intelligence coup, the agent left Yemen with the device and delivered it to the CIA.

The FBI is currently examining the seized device.

No target had been chosen and no plane tickets were purchased at the time the plot was foiled.

Officials say the device bears hallmarks of the bomb sewn into the underwear of a suicide bomber on a plane headed for Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009.

The latest version includes powerful industrial explosives and did not use metal, presumably allowing it to pass through airport security.
