African Union to send 5,000 peacekeepers to Burundi

  • The African Union has authorized sending 5,000 peacekeepers to Burundi in a bid to stop the violence there from spiraling further.

The “prevention and protection mission” will be deployed for six months and can be extended.

The unrest in Burundi started after president Pierre Nkurunziza announced his decision to stand for election again. The opposition and many citizens denounced the move as unconstitutional, but Nkurunziza went on to win the polls in July and was re-elected for a third term.
