Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani inaugurated

  • Ashraf Ghani, the incoming Afghanistan president, has been inaugurated in the first power transition after Hamid Karzai became president.

Abdullah Abdullah, the man who fought against Ghani in the bitterly contested poll campaign that saw both sides trading charges of electoral fraud, has agreed to become the chief executive, a newly-created post.

An eventual recount, carried out with the help of the United Nations, reduced Ghani’s victory margin by a percentage point, but he was still declared winner.
